Subject and Association Description"A stirring incident of the late South African War. At Modderfontein on September 17th 1901 the C Squadron of the 17th Lancers were surprised and surrounded. The odds were 150 of our lancers to 400 of the enemy. Position untenable, but answering their young officers shout of no surrender the death of the boys upheld the famous motto of their regiment by fighting til they fell from explosive bullets at 20, 10 and even 5 yards.such deeds may not win battles but such courage makes our nation."
