About this objectAs the name implies the Squaring Axe was used generally for Squaring timber. This process was generally concerned with preparing "Sleepers", Planks for Bridges and Beams for early construction. The Broad Axe was used in great numbers during the round timber era. The advent of the Circular Saw virtually saw the end of the Axemen and their Axes. The Axes were kept in
perfect condition and some Axemen were most adept at the
trade. The Axes were available with blade bevels to suit left or right hand axemen. Some handles were made with a "Bow" in them so that the handle would not strike the
timber on the downward cutting stroke.
I bought this Axe with a few old wooden planes along with another Broad Axe which, somewhere along the line disappeared. They were on sale along with many old tools and shop equipment at Condoblin.
