About this objectThis "Coopers" Draw Knife was used for making
Wooden Casks. Cooper's were specialised Tradesmen. Later
in this country the knife was used for working soft
woods and helped in the shaping of furniture and fancy
woodwork round and inside early homes. Still in use in other countries, it is difficult to get one in good
condition in Australia. I found this knife, well sheltered from the weather many years ago, where the old Blayney Brewery stood on the bank of the Belabula Rivulet, adjacent to the old bridge which once took traffic to Barry, Trunkey Creek, Neville and such areas. It is in good conddition and obviously had done little work. I guess that someone at some time when the Mill
was working, placed the old knife in a safe place and
there for some reason or another it slept for many
years. Where it originally came from we will never know,
it has been saved for posterity and as a part of
Blayney's heritage.
