About this objectDouble ended glass vessel used to feed infants. Also known as a banana bottle, the design has a teat at one end and a valve at the other end. It is inscribed 'The New Century Feeder' and 'valve' (end) with calibrations (side) indicating ounces and tablespoons.
Belonged to a local nursing sister and donated by her nephew.
Developed in the late 19th century, the banana bottle with a teat and valve was slightly modified in the early 20th century, with the final design of the 'Allenbury Feeder' in 1910 to remain unchanged for the next 50 years. The ease of cleaning was a major breakthrough in nursery hygiene.
This type of bottle is credited with saving the lives of many hand reared babies in the early years of the 20th century.
Currently on display in the' Babies of Carcoar' exhibition.
