Subject and Association KeywordsFrozen Charlotte Bottle Stopper
Subject and Association DescriptionSpot the The Frozen Charlotte. It was likely to have been used as a bottle stopper, the cork stopper has disintegrated, so you are looking for her head only.
Frozen Charlotte dolls were originally made in Germany. They increased in popularity and were then manufactured in other countries. In the United States they became associated with a folk story about a young girl travelling to a ball in a carriage.
The girl refused her mother's advice to wrap up in blankets due to the cold weather. She wanted to be seen in her finery not wrapped up in blankets. The story goes that she was found dead and frozen on arrival at the ball.
