He had belonged to the 54th Battalion, then was in the 2/3 Australian Infantry Battalion, serving in Perth, Darwin and New Guinea. “Darkie” remembered being on the Sydney Harbour Bridge with a young lady, when the Japanese attacked Sydney Cove on February, 1942. At first, he thought it was a fireworks display!
