About this objectThe Viv Kable Collection was gifted to Blayney Shire Council by Viv Kable and opened in the library on 13th May 1987. The collection is primarily made up of early European settlement tools of trade and agricultural tools with some household items. There are approximately 240 items with small items like bottle stoppers through to the larger items of bullock yoke and a brick hod.
The Viv Kable Collection is historically significant as an outstanding reference collection that covers a diverse range of early European settlement trades. The condition of the collection is generally good with few instances of damage or deterioration. The associated documentation provides detailed histories and provenance relating to most of the items. This outlines their uses, importance and previous ownership. The collection’s potential for local interpretative displays and also as an educational resource is strong. Unfortunately, the collection is currently packed away with only a token number on display at Blayney library without reference to the entire collection.
Overall, the collection has a high local heritage significance as a repository of Central Western rural artefacts and moderate state heritage significance as a reference collection in the study of tools and manual trades in early rural New South Wales.
