About this objectHarold Boyd practiced as a dental surgeon in Canowindra from circa 1911 to 1967 when he retired.
Large dentistry collection including dentistry cabinet and contents, 2 dentist chairs (1 with basin attached), extendable drill, extendable drawer and contents, foot pedal drill, steriliser and stand, dentist brass plaque, 3 glass cabinet and books, 4 drawer tool chest, framed certificates, 2 early dentistry diaries and other associated items.
The Boyd dentistry items represent a period of time when the population was on a boom and shopping and commerce was conducted entirely within the town, including going to the dentist. Harold Boyd returned to work as a dentist after finishing his education and stayed for the length of his career. Most local families remember, maybe not favourably, a visit to Mr Boyd at some time.
The provenanced Boyd collection dentistry from the first half of the 20th century is rare. Collections are mostly split up and the more interesting pieces, such as the cabinet, drill and chairs, sold off as antiques. Being able to be displayed as an entire collection at the Canowindra Museum and to tell a local business story is a great asset.
