About this objectBrown canvas covered Field Message Book, with two black cloth loops to secure the book closed. On either side of the cover are small narrow sleeves to store writing implements, and a pencil is in one of these.
The lined pages of the message book have handwritten notes on military procedures, equipment, price lists, soldier details and mud maps.
At the back of the book is a pocket fitted to the back page with various typed documents inside.
There are two black and white photographs loose inside the message book.
1. Two soldiers in a portrait made into a postcard, and on the reverse, handwritten in blue ink, 'U. George Mills on right'. There is a small watermark on the bottom right of the postcard, 'The Swiss Studios, SYDNEY'.
2. Nineteen soldiers arranged outside a building, some seated and others standing, made into a postcard. On the reverse, handwritten in black ink, is a message to 'George' from 'Jack' dated, 26.7.17, at Queens College, Oxford. The message states the photograph 'shows the cadets from the 68th squad. I am in the centre'. A watermark on the bottom right of the postcard, "TURNER PHOTOGRAPHER / 110.S. ALDATES, OXFORD".
