Orange & District Historical Society was formed in May 1949 by a group of Orange citizens interested in preserving history and historical links. They had voluntarily erected a memorial to Banjo Paterson and became involved in the erection of a memorial to Sir Thomas Mitchell on Mount Canobolas. They were involved in the planning of the centenary of the discovery of Gold at Ophir and the preservation of historic graves in the district. The first president was Richard Sheridan.
The society met at several venues before moving in 1968 to the Cultural Centre in Sale Street (the former Infants School). Here the first museum was established. In 1986 the society moved the museum to the former library building in McNamara Street after the City Library was relocated to the new Civic Square. The society’s museum operated here until 1999 when the site was sold for development and the collection moved into storage. The society and its archives were then moved to the present location at Heritage Cottage, 148 March Street.
The society meets:
Every Wednesday at Heritage Cottage 148 March Street from 10am to 4pm to work on research, collection management etc.
