Charles Henry Packham

The ‘Packham’s Triumph’ pear was developed at Garra, south west of Molong by Charles Henry Packham after many years of experimentation and was recognized immediately as an outstand fruit.

The pear was developed by crossing an Uvedale’s St. Germain (sometimes called a Bell) and a Williams’ pear. Packham’s Triumph is a medium to large sweet flavoured fruit, its appearance is characterized by an irregular or bumpy shape and flesh which is white and juicy.

For over a century Molong’s Packham pear has been a favourite of Australian chefs and families. Packham’s Triumph is one of the most popular pears in Australia and is a main export variety.

He was an active member of the Methodist church, Garra. He died of acute dysentery on 20 March 1909 at his home and was buried in the Methodist cemetery, Garra. His wife, four sons and four daughters survived him.
